Stone Crabs Drop Hammerheads, 2-1
|
Hurler Manny Fernández gave the Charlotte Stone Crabs a solid start. The native of Mao, Valverde helped his team defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads, 2-1, at Roger Dean Stadium. Fernández, now 2-1, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 3, walking 0, and allowing no runs. Josh Cox sewed up the save, his 3rd.
Charlotte used a clutch at-bat from Juan Rocha to capture the win. The center fielder hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Stone Crabs ahead, 2-0. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"If we keep winning the close games," Rocha said, "we'll be in good shape at the end."
The loss has the Hammerheads at 7-6.
