The 3-hit performance of Phil Lind, who is tied for 2nd in the MID in RBI with 77, helped the South Bend Cubs beat the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 14-1. Artie Maddox, the winner, is now 7-11. He struck out 3 and walked 4 over 8.2 innings, while allowing 1 run on 5 hits. The defeat makes Bowling Green 63-55.
Chris Allen had a big run-scoring double for the Cubs in the bottom of the second inning. With South Bend leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a sinker from Ken Horn and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 35th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cubs ahead, 2-0.
"We've had a tough go of it," said Bowling Green manager James Hoyt. "But we'll snap out of this funk."
